CAT, MOUSE AND COCK

One day a little mouse came running home, crying, “mother,, oh, mother!” The mother mouse, nearly frightened t death, asked,, “whay, what’s the mater?”

     “Oh, mother, I was something terrible in the garden. “I was two things in the garden I’ve never seem before. One was very pretty with a long tail. It had velvet clothes on just like ours, only the collours  ware a
bit different. Oh, it looked so kind and gentle. I was coming to wards me in such a kind was. I was so glad, and I should have gone right up to it if a big yellow-legged monster had not come up at that very moment between me and the nice thing!

     Mother mouse smiled and said, “Oh dear, it’s lucky you’ve got home savely. That big yellow-legged this was only a cook. It wouldn’t have done you any harm. It wouldn’t hurt you at all!......Bur the other thing with the velvet clothes and light-green eyes that you thought so kind and gentle and pretty, was a cat! The cruel murderer of our folk! The evil one! It would have eaten you all up in a moment if the cock hadn’t com between just then!”
